How did you first become involved with Foodsavers Corp, and what inspired you to dedicate your time as a volunteer?
Gwen first became involved with Foodsavers Corp through Peter when he was working at Gather New Haven. She was interested in the challenge of working with a start-up non-profit and dealing with the marketing side of public health. She is a senior Public Health major at Southern Connecticut State University, looking forward to graduating in May 2024. She is passionate about making a positive impact in her community and beyond.
What aspects of volunteering with Foodsavers Corp do you find most fulfilling, and how has it contributed to your personal growth and sense of community?
Interning with Foodsavers Corp has been incredibly fulfilling for Gwen in several ways. Firstly, being part of an organization that is dedicated to reducing food waste and addressing food insecurity aligns perfectly with her values of compassion and responsibility. Knowing that her efforts directly contribute to helping individuals and families in need access nutritious food is incredibly rewarding. Secondly, volunteering with Foodsavers Corp has provided her with numerous opportunities for personal growth. Volunteering has helped her build confidence in herself and her abilities, which has been invaluable in both her personal and professional life.
Beyond your volunteer work, are there any specific food-related passions or interests that you bring into your role, and how do they enhance your contributions to Foodsavers Corp?
Gwen is currently working on a thesis based on food policy and harmful food ingredients in our food supply. Her thesis work helps to provide insights into effective strategies for educating the community about food safety and nutrition, which can enhance Foodsavers Corp’s outreach and education efforts. Overall, her passion and expertise in food policy and harmful food ingredients can significantly enhance her contributions to Foodsavers Corp and help advance its mission.
How do you think the experience you gained from working with Foodsavers Corp will help you in your future endeavors?
Working with Foodsavers Corp has provided Gwen with valuable experience and skills that will benefit her in her future endeavors. Firstly, she has gained a deep understanding of food insecurity and food waste issues, as well as the complexities of addressing these challenges at the community level. This knowledge will be invaluable in any future work she does related to public health, food policy, or community development. Overall, the experience she has gained from working with Foodsavers Corp has equipped her with the skills, knowledge, and values that she believes will make her a more effective and compassionate professional in whatever path she chooses to pursue in the future.
